Greenspiration 2

Greenspiration 1 here.

A couple of weeks back, I visited Varthur area in Bangalore, which has a string of really good nurseries along the road. It was precisely at the time I was feeling really greenspired as some of my consistent efforts (if you can call watering plants that) had just begun to show some results.

I had been looking for a bougainvillea plant. I love these thorny, earthy trees. I get an immense joy out of the many colors that bloom out of this thorny tree. So we set out on mission bougainvillea and I ended up buying six other plants.

The nursery was spread out upto one km inside its gate and there was a dizzying variety of flowering plants, cacti, shrubs, indoor plants and what not. Mera bas chalta to mein sarehi utha lati. The owner was a darling old man who spoke only kannada. So we communicated with signs and excessive expressions (on my part). The plants were all unbelievably inexpensive. When I  checked with my mum, she told me that those were the normal prices, and the smaller nurseries within the city just overcharge. No wonder then that the tiny nursery in Indiaranagar charged so much more. But anyway, no price is too much for plants I guess.

This is the bougainvillea nicely settled in the corner that had just enough space after the washing machine went there.

The three other plants were what I had gotten earlier.

Then these lovely flowering plants. I have some kind of bee visitors every morning now. 🙂

After repotting

After repotting

I transplanted my basil seedlings into a rectangular tray, and they started growing miraculously well. I have now figured out that basil and mint grow together in one pot much better than growing a single cutting in a separate pot.

My mint is growing crazy, and I have repotted some cuttings. I plan to keep multipying the mint by taking sturdy cuttings and replanting them in smaller pots, and giving them away as gifts. same goes for basil.

The cause of my gratefulness

Here’s my chili. I am amazed and grateful. I had just randomly thrown in some seeds after seeding an organic chili. Yay! These are organic chili plants. cute, huh?

A colleague had given me her plants when she left the company. Our company apparently gives away saplings once every year. This is my first year, so I am waiting excitedly to find out what’s the theme this year. Last year it was indoor plants, and before that, medicinal plants. So, though the indoor plants she gave me looked great on my desk, they were in serious need of transplanting. They were too big for their paper cup holders, and the roots had started rotting. So I’ve replanted them in bigger pots, and given the creeper some support. It was almost falling off. Here it is gracing my living room.

And a couple more pics just because I have them.

I hope these keep growing. I already have more basil and mint than I need. I can’t believe how generous these plants are. I plan to stick a note outside my home in a few weeks for neighbors to come and take some herbs whenever they need them.

  1. Yaar, this is some serious gardening stuff you have going on here. Nicely green thumbed, keep it up, I must say. I really must get off my big bum and do something about the pots. If you have heard of My Sunny Balcony, do you have any thoughts on it? Asking only because it is in Ulsoor and Varthur sounds very far to me. My only gardening contribution has been liking all of these gardening related pages on Facebook and reading posts on the OTG group.

    1. hehe. Thank you! I started off the exact same way! Joined OTG and Container Gardening without boundries. Haven’t heard of Sunny Balcony, but I’m sure it’s fine. Most nurseries will have the basic stuff. I got my first 3 plants from a random roadside guy near RMZ infinity. It’s not bad at all. Get soil from the nursery as well. Or better, try this potting soil (http://bigbasket.com/pd/40017942/eco-ready-to-pot-readymix-5-kg/). I get this from Big Basket as otherwise it’s harder to lug around sacks of soil. The soil in the compound of my apartment is too clay like, so there was too much water retention.

If you are interested in herbs, I can give you some basil, all you’ll have to do is repot it after a few days. Can give you some mint as well to get started off. Apart from these two, all the other plants I have are of the kind that need little to no maintenance, apart from the occasional watering.

I think once you start, it just takes off. I hadn’t even been interested in gardening about 4 months back. I don’t where the sudden inspiration came from.

    1. OMG! This is incredible! Thank you so much for sharing. 🙂

I love the thought behind it. We indeed cut trees for furniture, what a brilliant thought to grow them instead.

I really do hope that people start growing trees to mark every important milestone in lives. Be it birthdays, anniversaries, promotions…anything. I am seriously considering gifting people saplings for all occasions.

      1. That is a great idea. We need more trees. In fact the carpentry workshop I attended started from this exact point of cutting trees for furniture. The dude who conducts it is quite the cynical philosopher and fun to listen to though some folks were quite taken aback with the things he was saying. Also recently read of a place in Rajasthan where they plant trees every time a girl child is born. So progressive!

      2. Oh is it? I would love to listen to him. I quite enjoy it when people speak about something that’s sort of unusual and shocking to most. 😀

I know! It was a great article. Something positive to do with girls!

      3. Yeah, it’s great fun. One man kept saying, “you hate all people, you hate everyone” to which Hamsa – the teacher just kept laughing.

      4. hahahaha…I really appreciate people who can just smile or laugh even when people just attack them. I so cannot do that. I get defensive, especially when the other person is saying something completely illogical and ridiculous, and still wants you to accept his/her point of view.

A similar incident happened at work on Friday. It was mind-numbingly ridiculous. Going to write a post about it.

  2. Haan, please likho. I find it cathartic to read. I can’t bring myself to write workplace nonsense because folks know of my blog space.

    1. Oh is it? That’s tricky.

I had started this blog to sort of get over my mounting work frustration so didn’t share much. But then I goofed up. I have a food blog which I generally do share with people. But the two blogs were linked, and I realized it after I shared the food blog with a colleague. I freaked out and deleted the former version of this blog (it had a similar but slightly different name). I then had to spend half a day to import the previous blog posts, separate the usernames. Terrible it was.

      1. Yeah, managing digital identities is tricky and anonymity is a thin veneer that can easily be breached. The good thing is that people’s attention span being what it is these days, they generally skip reading any thing 😀

      2. I know! That was my only hope. But since that point, I have shared this blog with only 2-3 people. The rest is when people stumble upon it. That’s more fun though. 🙂 Like you did, and then I found your blog, which I love btw.

      3. Thanks 🙂 You have no idea how much your posts helped. I think people generally feel alone with workplace stress because it is difficult and tricky to confide in colleagues. And though family is supportive you are always left wondering if there is something you could have done better to avoid such a situation. It is definitely taking a toll on me. I don’t know how people can bear doing this to one another and still have a clear conscience. It is so not in tune with anything that is good.

      4. Yes! exactly! And it makes you feel stupid for caring so much. I have seen this happen a dozen times. People just say somethings without even thinking twice about it. And then they act all normal, and you are made to think like you are the one who are impractical and can’t handle normal work stress. The truth being, it’s really frustrated people who impose such emotions on you.

I generally end up regretting it if I ever share anything with a colleague. If i start talking, I talk a LOT, and then honestly confide. But you never know how that might be used against you. And it’s people like us, who don’t conform, who are seen as bizarre. I have even received then, “oh you’re so young, you’ll change with time.” reaction. I HATE that.

      5. Yeah. Learnt not to do that after being slightly damaged. Thankfully, I hadn’t said too much because this person couldn’t hold it in. That was also surprising. How easily confidences are abused. Never ever doing that again with any work person. It is a minefield out there.

      6. Absolutely! I have learned it the hard way. But even now, I get easily excited if I feel that someone had a similar world view, and hence it’s okay to share stuff with them. More often than not, I find out the ugly truth only a bit late. I wish I could be a bit more like some people I know. Very cordial at work, but nobody would know a thing about their personal life, their choice, life philosophies. They are a bit of a mystery, and carry the kind of aura that noone would want to mess with them. Slightly intimidating even, but not enough to actually call it a flaw. It’s my ideal really.

      7. Yeah, that would be good to have. Be intimidating only enough to deter people from trying to bully or needle you into reacting to their nonsense.
